The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States and one of the most sought-after modern gold coins in the world. Authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and first released by the U.S. Mint in 1986, it has become a symbol of enduring value, exceptional craftsmanship, and trusted gold purity.

Because the term “eagle” was historically used for pre-1933 $10 U.S. gold coins, today’s American Gold Eagles are commonly described by their weight (e.g., “1/4 oz American Gold Eagle”) to avoid confusion. These coins are offered in four sizes—1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz—and each is guaranteed by the United States government for its weight, content, and purity. Struck in a 22-karat (.9167 fine) gold alloy known as “crown gold,” these coins are designed to withstand handling and resist wear, a tradition dating back to 19th-century gold coinage. By law, the gold used must originate from U.S. sources and is alloyed with small amounts of copper and silver for added durability.

The obverse design showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic depiction of Lady Liberty, a full-length figure with flowing hair holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, with the U.S. Capitol in the background. This design, originally featured on the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt, is widely considered one of the most beautiful in U.S. coinage history.

The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, features a powerful image of a male eagle carrying an olive branch above a nest with a female eagle and her hatchlings—symbolizing family, tradition, and America’s strength. Beginning in 2021, the reverse design was updated to feature a close-up profile of an eagle, along with enhanced security features to combat counterfeiting.

While each Gold Eagle carries a legal tender face value ($5, $10, $25, and $50 depending on size), its actual market value is determined by its gold content and fluctuates with the spot price of gold. These coins are widely recognized and highly liquid, making them a trusted choice for collectors and those looking for a tangible store of wealth.

In addition to standard bullion coins, the U.S. Mint also produces Proof and Burnished (uncirculated) editions of the Gold Eagle. These collector-grade coins are struck with special care, offering superior finishes and presentation packaging, and often sell at a premium over bullion versions.

The American Gold Eagle’s combination of historical artistry, legal tender status, and government-backed gold content continues to make it a cornerstone of precious metal collections and a timeless symbol of American excellence.
